Folkdancer Quilt Groupies

Susan was pleased that several of us came out to her quilt show today -- she had 2 quilts in the show, and one of them (the dragon quilt that we've been hearing about) got a second-place ribbon.  It's quite impressive:

BBC: Dancing robots reveal cultural cues

Seems like this study is related to what we call "the folk process" and "we do it differently in our village" :-)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-18352293

"Prior to being let loose, some of the robots had been programmed to perform different dances - essentially an intricate series of movements.
The researchers planned to find out how culture and shared behavioural traditions got passed on by studying how the robots told each other about these dances."

Hi and happy Spring!

I have hot-off-the-press news of a special event coming up at Fermilab International Folk Dancing:

Jaap Leegwater, the well-known Dutch teacher of Bulgarian folk dance, will be making a visit to the Midwest and will do a special workshop at our group on Thursday, April 26, and follow up with a review session the following week, on Thursday, May 3.  We're very pleased and excited to have him for this unexpected appearance!

The workshop will be held at Fermilab's Village Barn, on the Fermilab site, starting at 7:30 p.m., both Thursdays.  We hope you can join us!

You can download a printable flyer about this at www.fnal.gov/orgs/folkdance/

In one other bit of late breaking news, I just heard that we can't use the Barn April 19 because of a lab function. So dancing will move to Ramsey Auditorium that evening.

Chicagoland Scandinavian events

Received from Roo:

Subject : Chicagoland and Beyond Scandinavian events

Enclosed and or attached is information about events in Chicagoland in the near future.  You are most welcome to pass the information along.

Looking forward to seeing you at our Chicagoland Scandinavian turning dance classes as well as the following events.

Friday, February 24th:
Rørosmartnan Live with Dalakopa
Arrangements have been made for a high quality streaming webcast of Dalakopa playing for dancing in Røros during the annual even and sharing that with us via webcast.  The flyer with details is attached to this email.
RSVPs are requested (though not required) to Tim Eischen:  EischenTim@aol.com

From Mary Allsopp
Scandinavian Jam Tunes from February (and prior Scandinavian Jams) are now posted. The .PDF file lists which tunes were played and taught for each month.  Here's the link for tunes and the tune list:

Saturday, March 3   Finnish fiddler Arto Jarvela and Kaivama come to the Fiddle Club of the World (hosted by our own Paul Tyler). Tunes taught will likely be incorporated into the jam... especially if you fall in love with one and request it! Here's more info:  http://oldtownschool.org/connect/fiddleclub

Friday - Sunday, March 9-11 Swedish music & dance retreat at Folklore Village, Dodgeville WI.   I highly recommend this event, even though it conflicts with the monthly jam. Retreat includes dance and music workshops on Friday, Saturday as well as Sunday morning, plus reviews on Sunday. Opportunities to dance and jam and to fill your ears with the dance and music of Sweden.  http://folklorevillage.org/t2/calendar#Cultural%20Retreats
Thursday March 22, concert with Bruce Molsky and Ale Moller at Old Town School. Ale is a fantastic Swedish fiddler who collaborates with many musical styles. From the description, I would expect this concert to have more of an American than Swedish flavor.

Ellen Johnson Memorial Scholarship, College of Dupage

A scholarship has been established at College of Dupage to honor the memory of Ellen Johnson, a long-time folkdancer, who passed away a little over a year ago.  The first annual scholarship has just been awarded.  Here is information about how to apply, and how to donate:

Ellen's son says "We have guaranteed the scholarship for at least 10 years.  If the funds are there, it can go longer." Those wishing to make a contribution to the Ellen Johnson Memorial Scholarship may do so by writing a check made payable to the College of DuPage Foundation and in the memo portion of the check write “Ellen Johnson Memorial Scholarship”. Please send the check to the attention of Tom Simandl, Manager of Development, College of DuPage Foundation, 425 Fawell Blvd., Glen Ellyn, IL 60137.

Cancelled: Fri 1/20/12 folk dancing in Downers Grove, IL

Sorry if you're disappointed about not going out in the snow tonight, but due to the current and predicted weather for this evening, we've decided to call off dancing in Downers Grove Friday 1/20/12.  Hope to see you next week when we hope the weather will be more conducive.

Snow's over, we'll be meeting tonight as usual

Looks like the snowstorm is over, so, in case you were wondering, we're planning to meet as usual for dancing tonight, Friday, January 13, 2012.  Even though it's Friday the 13th :-)
