June Folk Dance Camp May 16-19 NIU Dekalb

Received from Mady:
...registration is open for "June Camp", ... at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. It will be held this year, exceptionally, in May, from the evening of Thursday, May 16, through Sunday noon, May 19. Featured teachers are the entertaining duo Sonia Dion and Cristian Florescu, and there are live music dance parties every evening. There are various registration categories possible, including options for those in the area who wish to drive in but stay at home. However, because of our early dates, the registration late fee date is already coming up soon, April 25, and all overnight and meal registration closes May 6. (You can only come for workshop or party only registration after that date.) Full details including online and PayPal registration are on the June Camp website at  https://sites.google.com/site/junecampifd/
We encourage you to attend June Camp, but since we unfortunately have Saturday & Sunday conflicts this year, we won't be able to make it, and therefore will be meeting for dancing in Downers Grove as usual on Friday night May 17.

June Camp May 31 - June 3, 2018 - Registration Open

Received from the June Camp Committee:
Registration for June Camp 2018 is open! The website has been updated with information about this year's exciting dance camp, which will be held, as usual, the weekend after Memorial Day, from Thursday evening, May 31, through Sunday morning, June 3.

The venue will again be the Holmes Student Center at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL, with its huge ballroom and comfortable hotel rooms.

We're very pleased to bring back world-renowned Croatian dance teacher Ċ½eljko Jergan, who will teach a new program of dances, but also be willing to review some of his previously taught dances in Friday's Dance Exchange.

Qur favorite musicians from the Pinewoods Band - Tom Pixton, Ralph Iverson, and newcomer Yaron Shragai - will be back for great dance parties every evening.

Once again we'll have a Boutique and Silent Auction to raise money for our scholarship fund, so you can start finding those unneeded treasures you might want to donate!

The late fee deadline is May 10 and any T-shirts must be ordered by May 4, so don't delay! Go to the website to check out the details, find the online registration form, and use PayPal or send a check to reserve your spot!

There are special prices for full-time students and work scholarships. (Application deadline for these is May 4; there is an online work scholar application).

You can contact us at junecampifd@gmail.com with any questions. We hope to see you in DeKalb!

Hi and happy Spring!

I have hot-off-the-press news of a special event coming up at Fermilab International Folk Dancing:

Jaap Leegwater, the well-known Dutch teacher of Bulgarian folk dance, will be making a visit to the Midwest and will do a special workshop at our group on Thursday, April 26, and follow up with a review session the following week, on Thursday, May 3.  We're very pleased and excited to have him for this unexpected appearance!

The workshop will be held at Fermilab's Village Barn, on the Fermilab site, starting at 7:30 p.m., both Thursdays.  We hope you can join us!

You can download a printable flyer about this at www.fnal.gov/orgs/folkdance/

In one other bit of late breaking news, I just heard that we can't use the Barn April 19 because of a lab function. So dancing will move to Ramsey Auditorium that evening.

Other folk dance events coming up include:

Saturday, April 21 - Sarah Falkoff teaching at the Appleton, WI workshop, potluck and party, with music by Orkestar Bez Ime

Fermilab: Iliana Bozhanova & Todor Yankov - April 8 + more

Received from Mady:

Hi,

Counting down to spring here and with it, a number of special dance events!

At our own group, Fermilab international folk dancing will be hosting Iliana Bozhanova, whose workshop we enjoyed in February 2009, for a return visit, this time with live music by accordionist Todor Yankov who is traveling with her on this tour from Bulgaria. We’ll have an evening that’s part review workshop and part Bulgarian dance party on Thursday, April 8, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Kuhn Village Barn. It will be a great time to enjoy some wonderful live music and fine teaching. Suggested donation is $8 ($4 for students) (but it is a donation, and not required).

More dancing again that weekend, for another repeat visit: this one from Jeanette and Mike Watts who brought us Cross-Step Waltz two years ago. They will hold a workshop on Sunday afternoon, April 11, from noon to 4, again at Kuhn Village Barn at Fermilab. Come to learn and practice the basic step of this accessible variety of vintage waltz between 12 and 2, then stay for an intermediate class to go over variations from 2 to 4. (Please don’t come to the later class unless you’ve been here for the first, or know the basics from a previous workshop. Suggested donation is $5 per session or $8 for the whole afternoon (students $3 per session and $5 for the afternoon).

More information on these from me, or on our website at www.fnal.gov/org/folkdance  -- as well as flyers to print, if you need some for your group.

Sooner than that, come next week, March 25, when we’ll bid farewell to longtime regular Nancy, who is moving to Michigan.

In other news, if you’re around Chicago this weekend, don’t miss the workshops and performances of Balkanske Igre’s Spring Festival – live music parties, workshops, a Balkan dinner and dance performance extravaganza on Saturday evening.

There’s also a special FREE Barn Dance at Fermilab’s Kuhn Village Barn Sunday afternoon March 21 to celebrate Dave Harding’s birthday. Dot Kent is calling with the Volo Bogtrotters.

Monday, March 22, Ventzi Sotirov will be teaching Bulgarian dances at Evanston’s international folk dance group, 7:30 - 10:30 p.m., at the Lake Street Church of Evanston, 607 Lake Street - NW corner of Lake Street and Chicago Ave., $5. They will also have Iliana Bozhanova on April 12.

Last but not least, June Camp, the international folk dance weekend at Beloit College, will have Kete Ilievski (who is also at the Chicago Spring Festival) teaching Macedonian dances, and Marilyn Smith teaching French dances, June 3 – 6. Registration flyers will be out in April. Check the website at http://junecampifd.googlepages.com or let me know if you want one sent to you. (You can pick up preliminary flyers at the Chicago Spring Festival, or print some from the website).

Happy dancing! and I’ll see you this weekend if you’re coming to Urbana’s Marchfest weekend of English, contra, and international folk dancing.

Cheers,
Mady

June Camp, Beloit College, June 3-6, features Macedonian and French dance teachers

Received from Mady :

Greetings,

As you watch the snow that you’re likely experiencing, it’s a good time to think about different weather and good times. Mark your calendars now for June Camp, one of the Midwest’s most fun dance workshop weekends: Thursday through Sunday, June 3 to 6, 2010.  And you can look forward to our featured dance teachers: Kete Ilievski, teaching dances of Macedonia, and Marilyn (Wathen) Smith, teaching dances of France.

It will be an exciting weekend, again at comfortable Beloit College with its air-conditioned dorms and wonderful food. We’re starting early again, to give one more evening of request parties, and more time for Dance Exchange workshop and possibly review by our featured teachers. There will be a live music dance party Saturday evening, following our classic Happy Hour. We intend to have music jamming sessions, the traditional Saturday ice cream social, and late-night dancing.

And we hope to keep the prices the same as last year, with scholarship help available for those who need it.

The website is at http://sites.google.com/site/junecampifd/ .  Registration fliers will be out by mid-March and will be downloadable there, or can be mailed to you if you contact us at junecampifd@gmail.com,

A more general announcement will go out soon, but I wanted to give you a heads-up that you can pick up a few paper copies of the registration flier with all the details at the Balkanske Igre Spring Festival in Chicago if you will be there this weekend, or at the Traditional Dance and Music Weekend in Urbana….OR you can download the flier from the new June Camp website at http://junecampifd.googlepages.com/ and make a few copies to distribute.

June Camp -- May 30 - June 1, 2008

Received from Mady:

Happy 2008!

As you start to plan this New Year, save the weekend of May 30 - June 1 for this year's fabulous June Camp. We're excited to announce that we'll have two main teachers this year: BOTH Jaap Leegwater, teaching his well-researched specialty of Bulgarian dance, AND Lee Otterholt, who will bring us a great mix of Balkan styles and also Norwegian.

The camp will again be at comfortable and convenient Beloit College, and will include such favorite aspects as the Friday afternoon Dance Exchange, request dancing Friday night, a live band Saturday evening, Happy Hour, the Ice Cream Social, a special commemmorative T-shirt, and a camp video.

Please save the dates, and look for registration flyers at Madison's Folk Ball. By the end of January, they should be available to download, along with further information on the new June Camp website at: http://junecamp2008.googlepages.com/

If you have questions, or if you'd like a paper flyer mailed to you, don't hesitate to contact us at this new email address for June Camp junecamp2008@gmail.com
