Fermilab international folk dancing is cancelled from now through the end of March. In response to the coronavirus threat and concerns to limit any possible spread, Fermilab has decided to cancel all public events this month. Fermilab English Country Dance Sun Sep 10, 2017 + other ECD events

"This Sunday afternoon, September 10, at Fermilab's Kuhn Barn, there will be English country dancing from 1 to 5 p.m. (experienced from 1 to 2 p.m., then all welcome), with live music by Old Fezziwig's Band. We'll start working on a few of the dances coming up on the Harvest Moon Dance Weekend programs (see below), as well as Pat Shaw and other favorites from our summer experiences. There are also dates for upcoming dances at Fermilab through the 2017-08 season on the website now. This coming Monday evening, September 11, from 7 to 10 p.m., there will be a special workshop with dance historian Susan de Guardiola, with live music by Tim Macdonald and Jeremy Ward, at Oak Park's Nineteenth Century Club. Susan's focus is "The dancing of early 19th century Edinburgh" and is based on her recent research into the dancing of the Lowe brothers. (More details on the website.) Of course, if you want to wear historic costume, that is always appreciated, though certainly not required.
Also coming up soon is our Harvest Moon Dance Weekend, October 13 - 15, held entirely at Oak Park's lovely Nineteenth Century Club, with superlative music by all four members of Bare Necessities and wonderful calling and workshops by Bruce Hamilton. The early bird price for the full weekend ($130 for adults, $85 for full time students and limited income seniors) expires September 15, so you might want to register online by then!

In news of Central Illinois, dancing in Champaign-Urbana will move from the previously announced date of Saturday, September 23, to Sunday afternoon, September 24, 2 to 5 p.m., at the Phillips Center.
English dancing in Evanston has already started up for the season every other Wednesday evening. Check the website for upcoming dates."

Romanian dance workshop with Mihai David July 18, Fermilab

Received from Mady:

Update:
We've decided to move the Mihai David Romanian workshop to Fermilab's Ramsey Auditorium to take advantage of the smoother floor and air-conditioned climate there (better a little crowded than so hot!), on Thursday, July 18, from 8 to 11 p.m. (note slightly different time as well).  In addition, our accordionist friend Don Weeda will be in town and will play for request dancing during the evening, when we take a break from workshop dances.
We’ll go back to the Barn for a SPECIAL event: Thursday, July 18:  MIHAI DAVID, the teacher of some of our favorite Romanian dances, will be at Fermilab’s Barn for a WORKSHOP!!  We’re moving to the Barn so that we have extra space, in hopes that lots of you will come. If the weather is warm, be aware that the Barn has no air-conditioning. There are several fans, but we could use extras if you want to bring one along (and maybe an extension cord).
Suggested donation for the workshop is $10 for adults, $5 for students, but remember it is only “suggested,” and you can come to participate in any case!  Mihai is appearing at the Door County Folk Festival (www.dcff.net), but to my current knowledge is not giving workshops elsewhere in the Chicago area on this trip.
Mihai is also doing a workshop at the Evanston Monday Night group on July 22.
You can download the flyer at http://www.fnal.gov/orgs/folkdance/MihaiJuly18.pdf  (If you run a group or will be seeing other dancers, kindly print a few and help us spread the word! – Thanks!)

Fermilab 25th Anniversary Party photos, past & present

There's a website called dearphotograph.com "take a picture of a picture, from the past, in the present" -- which seemed like kind of a cool idea, so I tried it out at the Fermilab 25th anniversary party last night (at which a good time was had by all, BTW; great turnout, lots of old friends in attendance).  I need to work on the technique, learn how to line things up better and focus better, but here are a few of the not-so-horrible attempts:

Then, because I wasn't happy with the way they looked when I got them uploaded to the computer, I tried monkeying with them after-the-fact, and/or trying to match the vantage point of old and new photos and putting them together without my chubby arm in the frame.  But somehow, that doesn't quite have the same effect, although there was something nice about being able to blend in people who are unfortunately no longer with us, as if there in spirit, and blending in the little kids who are now grown, moved away, and in some cases have kids of their own...

In one other bit of late breaking news, I just heard that we can't use the Barn April 19 because of a lab function. So dancing will move to Ramsey Auditorium that evening.

Waltz Workshop with Jeanette Watts, Oct. 22 at Fermilab, and other upcoming dance events

Received from Mady:

Lots of fun dance events coming up, in addition to the late October Halloween fun.

Fermilab’s dance groups are sponsoring a special full-day and evening Waltz Workshop with Jeanette Watts on Saturday, October 22, at Fermilab’s Kuhn Village Barn.  Jeanette will be teaching Cross-Step Waltz and its variations as well as Mazurka Waltz . You can check out the former in this classic video by Richard Powers (one of Jeanette’s teachers)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1V2BLHpVBT4
and Mazurka Waltz is shown in the following
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIZozQKadkw

Details are on the flyer at http://www.fnal.gov/orgs/folkdance/WaltzWorkshop.pdf
There will be 3 workshops during the day (at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.) and an evening Waltz party with some live music by Old Fezziwig’s Band in the evening. Workshops are $10 each, or there is a full-day-plus-evening price of $30.

The flyer doesn’t mention it, but I think  we’ll plan a potluck supper to go between the afternoon workshops and evening party. There is refrigeration in the Barn, and a place to plug in appliances, but no real kitchen.

Jeanette will also teach a workshop on the Basics of Bellydance on Sunday, Oct. 23, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. That will be held on the stage at Fermilab’s Ramsey Auditorium in the Wilson Hall high-rise (where international and Scottish dancing is held in the summer).

-----------------------------------
I’m too modest to advertise the weekend *I* am calling and teaching this coming weekend, Oct.14 - 15, but I can forward on this mention from Sue Hanson of Urbana:
“If you are a dance gypsy and don't mind last minute plans …. this weekend of traditional
dance sounds like a good one.
They will have American, Folk, and English. Mady Newfield, our folk dance
instructor for Marchfest, will be teaching English and International. Dale
Schreiber will teach Old Time Contra Squares and Rounds. There will be live
music by the Cosmic Otters (English/American) and Do Zore (International).

11TH ANNUAL Fairwater I.F.D Weekend
October 14 - 15 weekend
Fairwater, Wisconsin

https://sites.google.com/site/folkdanceworkshop/

----------------------------------------

And from Dan Garvin in Minneapolis, another reminder about the Oct. 28 – 30 weekend with Kete Ilievski teaching Macedonian dance at Tapestry.

“There is still time to take advantage of the early bird weekend package discount for Tapestry Folkdance Center's Fall Workshop with Kete Ilievski.  The weekend package price is $55 for Tapestry members or $65 for non-members if your registration is postmarked no later than 10/14/11.  This covers all four teaching sessions and the Saturday night dance party.

After the 14th, both prices increase by $15 -- still a savings compared to paying for each event separately. “

http://www.tapestryfolkdance.org/
-----------------------------------------

That same weekend, Oct 28 – 30, there is a Swedish dance weekend at Folklore Village with Roo Lester.  http://folklorevillage.org/t2/calendar#Fall Swedish

Evanston Monday Night Folk Dancers will  host noted Bulgarian dance teacher, Daniela Ivanova, on Monday, Oct. 17., at their usual location , the Lake Street Church of Evanston, 7:30 – 10:30 p.m.

Fermilab international folk dancing upcoming events + others

Received from Mady:
Subject : Fermilab international folk dancing upcoming events -- and others

Hi and Happy September!
With the cooler weather we’re back in the Barn – most of the time, unless Fermilab has a special event and we have to use Ramsey Auditorium. That will happen next week, Thursday, September 23 – come to the auditorium that day.

For tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 16, we will be in the Barn and I am planning a special session to remember the wonderful teaching and dances of our old friend, Dennis Boxell, who passed away last week.  I was very sorry to hear of this, and remember with great fondness the workshops of his which I experienced, most recently, his visits to us at Fermilab in April 2005 and November 2006. We’ll focus tomorrow on remembering some of those Balkan dances (and hopefully doing them with the correct style, which he would have appreciated so much!)

After the week of Sept. 23 at the Auditorium, we’ll return to the Barn for the foreseeable remainder of the fall.

On Thursday, Sept. 30, we will have an evening of French (and Quebecois and Breton) dances for some special guests from the Alliance Française of Du Page County. Please come and help us show these newcomers what fun we have.

In the meantime, with Chicago’s World Music Festival coming up, there are some opportunities not to be missed:

On Monday, Sept. 20, the Evanston Monday Night Folk Dancers will host the Kabile Bitov Ensemble from Bulgaria for a special Bulgarian Dance Party. They dance from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. the Lake Street Church of Evanston, 607 Lake Street, Evanston, IL (NW corner of Lake Street and Chicago Avenue – enter through courtyard arched entry on Chicago Avenue). Cost is just $5. More info at http://www.evanstonfolkdance.org/
Save the evening of Saturday, November 13, for EMNFD’s 3rd Annual Regional Potluck Dinner and Dance, at the same location.

For further interesting ethnic music possibilities, go to http://worldmusicfestivalchicago.org

Also, Cristian Florescu and Sonia Dion are teaching a workshop weekend  on Romanian dance at Tapestry in the Twin Cities (Minnesota), the weekend of October 22 – 24. I’m intending to drive up there for that. Please let me know if you’re interested in going. There are details in a flyer you can pick up from me, or I can send. (I haven’t been able to find it at tapestry.org.)

Hope to see you tomorrow, Monday, or soon!!

Cheers (and L’Shana Tova if you’re celebrating the holidays)

Bhangra dance teaching - Fermilab IFD Thurs 7/29/10

Received from Mady:

We have a special guest teaching us this coming Thursday. Sushma, our own international dancer, who has shown us her talents in traditional Indian dance in two previous workshops, will return present us with a Bhangra dance. She’s been off at the University of Pittburgh and danced there with a competitive dance team in Indian dance. We’re very glad to have her back this summer. Hope you can join us this Thursday, July 29, for her teaching, or in one of the next couple of weeks for the review. And come and dance some old and new favorites, in the cool of Ramsey Auditorium at Fermilab, every Thursday evening, 7:30 to 10, through the summer.

Fermilab: Iliana Bozhanova & Todor Yankov - April 8 + more

Received from Mady:

Hi,

Counting down to spring here and with it, a number of special dance events!

At our own group, Fermilab international folk dancing will be hosting Iliana Bozhanova, whose workshop we enjoyed in February 2009, for a return visit, this time with live music by accordionist Todor Yankov who is traveling with her on this tour from Bulgaria. We’ll have an evening that’s part review workshop and part Bulgarian dance party on Thursday, April 8, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Kuhn Village Barn. It will be a great time to enjoy some wonderful live music and fine teaching. Suggested donation is $8 ($4 for students) (but it is a donation, and not required).

More dancing again that weekend, for another repeat visit: this one from Jeanette and Mike Watts who brought us Cross-Step Waltz two years ago. They will hold a workshop on Sunday afternoon, April 11, from noon to 4, again at Kuhn Village Barn at Fermilab. Come to learn and practice the basic step of this accessible variety of vintage waltz between 12 and 2, then stay for an intermediate class to go over variations from 2 to 4. (Please don’t come to the later class unless you’ve been here for the first, or know the basics from a previous workshop. Suggested donation is $5 per session or $8 for the whole afternoon (students $3 per session and $5 for the afternoon).

More information on these from me, or on our website at www.fnal.gov/org/folkdance  -- as well as flyers to print, if you need some for your group.

Sooner than that, come next week, March 25, when we’ll bid farewell to longtime regular Nancy, who is moving to Michigan.

In other news, if you’re around Chicago this weekend, don’t miss the workshops and performances of Balkanske Igre’s Spring Festival – live music parties, workshops, a Balkan dinner and dance performance extravaganza on Saturday evening.

There’s also a special FREE Barn Dance at Fermilab’s Kuhn Village Barn Sunday afternoon March 21 to celebrate Dave Harding’s birthday. Dot Kent is calling with the Volo Bogtrotters.

Monday, March 22, Ventzi Sotirov will be teaching Bulgarian dances at Evanston’s international folk dance group, 7:30 - 10:30 p.m., at the Lake Street Church of Evanston, 607 Lake Street - NW corner of Lake Street and Chicago Ave., $5. They will also have Iliana Bozhanova on April 12.

Last but not least, June Camp, the international folk dance weekend at Beloit College, will have Kete Ilievski (who is also at the Chicago Spring Festival) teaching Macedonian dances, and Marilyn Smith teaching French dances, June 3 – 6. Registration flyers will be out in April. Check the website at http://junecampifd.googlepages.com or let me know if you want one sent to you. (You can pick up preliminary flyers at the Chicago Spring Festival, or print some from the website).

Happy dancing! and I’ll see you this weekend if you’re coming to Urbana’s Marchfest weekend of English, contra, and international folk dancing.

Cheers,
Mady
