"This Sunday afternoon, September 10, at Fermilab's Kuhn Barn, there will be English country dancing from 1 to 5 p.m. (experienced from 1 to 2 p.m., then all welcome), with live music by Old Fezziwig's Band. We'll start working on a few of the dances coming up on the Harvest Moon Dance Weekend programs (see below), as well as Pat Shaw and other favorites from our summer experiences. There are also dates for upcoming dances at Fermilab through the 2017-08 season on the website now. This coming Monday evening, September 11, from 7 to 10 p.m., there will be a special workshop with dance historian Susan de Guardiola, with live music by Tim Macdonald and Jeremy Ward, at Oak Park's Nineteenth Century Club. Susan's focus is "The dancing of early 19th century Edinburgh" and is based on her recent research into the dancing of the Lowe brothers. (More details on the website.) Of course, if you want to wear historic costume, that is always appreciated, though certainly not required.
Also coming up soon is our Harvest Moon Dance Weekend, October 13 - 15, held entirely at Oak Park's lovely Nineteenth Century Club, with superlative music by all four members of Bare Necessities and wonderful calling and workshops by Bruce Hamilton. The early bird price for the full weekend ($130 for adults, $85 for full time students and limited income seniors) expires September 15, so you might want to register online by then!

Fermilab ECD/Scottish/waltz news

Received from Mady:

Friday: English country dance and Jane Austen fans are welcome to come to a practice session this Friday, June 20th, at 7:30 p.m. to go over the Jane Austen dances we will be teaching for the Ball at the the Jane Austen Society annual general meeting in October. It will take place in Oak Park in the ballroom of the Oak Park Arms Retirement Community, 408 S. Oak Park Ave (60302). Fancy dress is optional. We will have an audience of the members of the retirement community. Putting on Aires will play. No admittance fee, just bring some money for tipping the band. $5 suggested.

Saturday: You can indulge in your love of things Scottish (including dancing) at the Chicago Highland Games, Friday evening and all day Saturday at the Oak Brook Polo Grounds. Come by the combined RSCDS Chicago Branch and Evanston Scottish Country Dancers tent to visit and find out about that kind of dancing. There will be demos at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and teaching at 11:15 a.m. at least. More info and schedules at www.chicago-scots.org

Sunday: There is a Waltz "Playshop" at this Sunday, June 22, at S.P.A.C.E. in Evanston, 1245 Chicago Ave. (at the corner of Dempster) from 7 to 10 p.m. There will be several bands, taking turns playing. A mini-workshop to show a few of the moves we learned at the "cross step" sessions several weeks ago will take place sometime during the evening, and there will be a few group dances. Admission is $5 at the door to cover rent, tipping the musicians is encouraged and a potluck dessert to share will be welcomed. More info at http://www.chicagobarndance.com/events.html

Hope to see you at one of these….

Happy dancing,

English Country Dance murder mystery story

When my Mom finishes reading her Ellery Queen Mystery Magazines, she passes them on to me to read. In the Sept/Oct 2007 issue, there's a story called "Parson Pennywick and the Whirligig", by Amy Myers in which the murder at the heart of the mystery occurs while dancing the English Country Dance "Sir Roger de Coverley". Not sure where one could get that back-issue, but if your local library subscribes to it, you might find it there. I'll bring a copy on Friday to pass around, for any mystery+ECD fans.

Fermilab upcoming dance events

Received from Mady:

From: "Mady Newfield"
To:"Mady Newfield"
Subject: Fermilab International Folk Dancing in the Auditorium this week plus upcoming events
Date: Wednesday, April 02, 2008 11:22:21 AM

Hi,

Just for this Thursday, April 3, Fermilab International Folk Dancing will be meeting in Ramsey Auditorium at Wilson Hall (Fermilab's high rise) instead of at the Barn. We'll be back to the Barn next week.

Looking ahead to other events of possible interest, this Saturday, April 5, there will be both an afternoon of English country dancing (2 p.m.) and an evening of Scottish country dancing (the RSCDS Chicago Branch Spring Dance, at 7 p.m.) at Fermilab's Barn, with a potluck supper in between.

Next weekend, April 11 -12, holds a visit by Zlatne Uste at Ethnic Dance Chicago's Spring Fling on Friday evening, and dancing in Millenium Park on Saturday (check it out at www.ethnicdance.net) OR a contra dance workshop with the band Nightingale and George Marshall calling at the University of Chicago (check it out at http://fac.uchicago.edu/danceweekend.html)

And save the first weekend in May: our Fermilab groups in conjunction with Tom Senior's Evanston English country dance group are sponsoring two workshops in Cross-Step Waltz, a very accessible and fun "vernacular" vintage waltz, taught by Jeanette Watts of Dayton, Ohio. One will be 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 2, at Fermilab's Barn, and the other at 7:30 p.m,. Saturday, May 3, at the Harvard Congregational Church, 2045 S. Kenilworth Av. in Oak Park. For more information or a copy of the flyer go to http://www.fnal.gov/orgs/folkdance/

Hope to see you soon!
