Sad news: Regina Fain

We were very saddened to learn yesterday that Regina had passed away in October.  We'd been missing her at folk dancing for the last couple of years since her health had started to fail.  Before that, we saw her at dancing almost every Friday, except during the Lyric Opera season when her season tickets sometimes included operas on Friday nights.  Back when we used to meet at the Argonne Rec Center, she was the one who set up the refreshment table, filled the punch bowl, etc., and was frequently one of the soup chefs for the Stone Soup Party.  She was very friendly and always greeted new dancers.  We miss her.

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/name/regina-fain-obituary?pid=1000000181704409

When a letter I had sent to her at the nursing home in Joliet was returned by the post office, and I google'd her name with some trepidation, in addition to sadly finding the obituary, I found an article about the quilting group that she met with at the Lemont Public Library (where she was also a volunteer, always helping with their book sales).  You can see Regina in some of the photos in the photo gallery with this article:

I tried to embed a slideshow below, but it doesn't seem to be showing up right -- here's the link:

If you're on Facebook, join the new Argonne IFD group

Charles helped Susan set up a facebook group for Argonne International Folk Dancing -- so if you're on facebook (I'm not), you should be able to join the group:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/argonneifd/

It's possible that once you're a member of the group you would be able to post to it by sending e-mail to:
argonneifd@groups.facebook.com  Since I'm not on facebook, it doesn't accept e-mail from me (I tried, and got back a "Permanent Error" failure from the mailer-daemon), so I don't know exactly how that works.  Rose & Michele are also tagged as admins, along with Charles & Susan.

Here are some instructions for how to join, if it's not intuitive; I found them by googling, so no guarantees: http://www.wikihow.com/Join-Groups-on-Facebook

I think they're looking for a way to have the blog posts here automatically shared to the new facebook group, but they can always be manually shared either with the facebook icon on each blogpost, or the "AddThis" widget in the sidebar.  If you know how to follow RSS feeds in facebook, you can get the RSS feed for this blog by clicking on the "Subscribe in a Reader" link in the sidebar,  http://feeds.feedburner.com/argonneifd
I found the following instructions for setting up facebook to follow an RSS feed by googling, again no guarantees: https://www.lifewire.com/set-up-rss-feed-on-facebook-3486528

While I was looking around for info about facebook groups (even though I'm not ready to jump on the facebook bandwagon myself), I found that EDC and the Evanston group have facebook pages that are searchable with google -- in case you want to follow them, so that you find out about events such as the Regional Folk Dance Potluck tonight (Nov 5) in Evanston, the Out-of-the-Woodwork Party, their New Years Eve party, etc:
https://www.facebook.com/ethnicdance/
https://www.facebook.com/Evanstonfolkdance

I gather that there is a difference between a facebook page, and a facebook group.  It appears that the facebook groups don't show up in a google search, while pages can show up -- Charles showed me that the Fermilab folk dance group has a facebook group, but I don't find it with google.

Anyway, if you're a facebook person, feel free to join the group and participate!

Penguin Dances

While browsing on Pinterest, I came across this purportedly USA folk dance, apparently being done in Italy:

As near as I can tell from my almost non-existent Italian, it's meant to be done with 5 couples, corresponding to 5 times thru the music, so that each couple gets to be the "protagonist".  I don't think we'll be adding it to our repertoire anytime soon, though.

But then in the sidebar on youtube I came across an entirely different penguin dance, which basically looks like the bunnyhop, but to much catchier music, and seems to be done at weddings all over the world, and all over social media:

There's a blog dedicated to it: https://penguindancemania.wordpress.com/
Which includes this German video from 1965 of a dance called "Letkiss", along the same lines:

If you try to look up "Penguin Dance" on Wikipedia, you get routed to the Bunny Hop:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bunny_hop_(dance)

Which also refers to it by the Finnish name "Letkajenkka" -- and you can find a lot of videos with that music (as in the 1965 Letkiss video).

Here are links to the recent Penguin Dance music:

Erik Butterworth's Music Database and others

This site has lots of information, including sheet music transcriptions for Bulgarian and other primarily Balkan folk music:
http://goldov.com/butterw/
http://goldov.com/butterw/emdb/

For example, searching for the titles of dances taught at Oconomowoc, I found sheet music for Toicevo and Tamatan, (I added the links to the previous post-Oconomowoc post).

Another place to looks for sheet music is:
http://abcnotation.com/search

From there I found music for Apley House , Passu Torrau , and Toicevo.

A couple more places to find folk dance sheet music:

post-Oconomowoc web surfing

Having spent the first half of my day struggling to get the video clips from Oconomowoc up on the blog, I decided to fritter away the second half of the day web surfing for videos, music, and info about the dances, now I'll share the links so you can fritter away some of your time, too:

The music for Menim Balam is also known as "Menim Balam Kime Neyler " or more frequently "Dut ağacı boyunca", and there are many versions of it:

I couldn't find much about Shumarsko, but while I was looking, I found a nice video of Cigansko Horo:
And I couldn't find the exact version of Popcorn that Daniel showed us at the after-party, but there are similar ones, like this:
And some less similar, including an Irish Step Dance version:

Oconomowoc 2016 video clips - YouTube playlist

Sorry this post is so delayed -- I tried to upload the videos to blog posts as I've done in the past, but blogger wasn't cooperating.  I tried 4 different browsers, two different computers with 2 different operating systems, two different video formats, but nothing worked -- it would upload successfully, but the "Processing video" step never finished, it just disappeared leaving only a broken link.  Anyway, after googling to see if I could find a solution, I finally found that the easiest thing would be to create a YouTube channel, put all the video clips in a playlist, and embed that in a blog post.  Hopefully this will work, probably better than the old ways, anyway.  I made the videos and the playlist "Unlisted", which means you can see them if you have the link, but they won't show up when searching YouTube.  Sorry for boring you with the details, but after several hours of wrestling with it, I just had to complain a little :-)
