Fermilab international folk dancing will host Bruce Hamilton and several Midwest English dance callers for a workshop on English ceilidh and other fun set dancing, this Thursday, October 15, at Kuhn Barn at Fermilab, 7:30 p.m. (no charge, but donations accepted.) Dancers can benefit from the knowledge and talents of callers who are visiting for an advanced callers' workshop that is taking place prior to the Harvest Moon Dance Weekend, with music by the nation's most famous English dance band, Bare Necessities, which will be held this weekend, Oct 16 - 18, at locations in St. Charles on Friday and Saturday, and in Oak Park on Sunday. There is still room at that weekend for advance online registration or for at the door admission ($25 for evening/Sunday afternoon dances, $20 for Saturday workshops with Jacqueline Schwab). Dancing participants are expected to have some knowledge of basic English country dance moves. More information about times, location, prices, as well as dance instructions are on the website at ChicagolandECD.org.

In addition, Peter Barnes of Bare Necessities will add his (enormous and varied) musical talents to the Barn dance on Monday evening, October 19, 7 - 9:40 p.m. at the Irish American Heritage Center, 4646 North Knox Ave, Chicago. The rest of the band includes Steve Rosen and Edward Wallace and the caller is Jo Mortland. They start a lesson at 6:45 p.m. Cost is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and students.

Hava Nagila - The Movie, on WTTW-Create/lWorld

http://www.pbs.org/program/hava-nagila/

You'll recognize a lot of other bits of dances and tunes, in addition to Hava Nagila, in this hour-long documentary.  And an amazing variety of renditions (including a Muppet playing it on the bagpipes...)

We just saw it on WTTW-Create/World, looks like it repeats at midnight tonight, if you happen to see this before then.  Otherwise, hopefully it will come around again, or you can get the DVD, maybe check it out of the library....

Ramo Ramo lyrics, Bollywood movie "Dosti"

It's amazing what you can find on youtube if you have enough time to fritter... here's a video clip from a 1964 Bollywood movie, with Serbian+English subtitles for the lyrics of Ramo, Ramo, Druze Moj, by Slobodan Ilic:

Here's the link to the video with Ramo Ramo:

Here's a link to about the same point in the Bollywood version of the movie, with a different song, presumably in Hindi: https://youtu.be/C1CLFK9T028

Here's the Wikipedia entry for the 1964 Dosti movie:

If you watch TV, you've probably seen the 30-sec version of this commercial -- here's an expanded version on youtube (warning, the song will probably be playing in your head the rest of the day if you watch this.  And, don't try this at home!):

(Note: I have nothing to do with UHC, just find this commercial amusing.)

Susan de Guardiola will be teaching an introduction to cross-step waltz next Saturday, April 4, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Ida Noyes Hall during the afternoon workshops of the University of Chicago's contra dance weekend with Les Z Boys and Seth Tepfer (which should itself be a fun time!). Then she'll be teaching Ragtime and Two step at Fermilab's Barn on Sunday afternoon, April 5, 3 to 6 p.m., and Cross Step Waltz - review and further moves Sunday evening from 7 to 10 p.m. (suggested $10 donation per workshop).

Monday evening, April 6, at Oak Park's 19th Century Club, Susan will present dances of the Victorian era for a Victorian Ball, 7 to 10 p.m., with live music by the Cosmic Otters and Tim Macdonald.
