Transylvanian workshop - Columbus OH Feb. 22-24 2008

Just got a batch of flyers from the Columbus Folk Dancers for their upcoming workshop:

Istvan Kosbor Teaching Dances from Transylvania
February 22-24, 2008 in Columbus Ohio

The paper flyers say Istvan Kosbor, though their website says Aron Szekely. There's a link on their website for a PDF flyer, but it doesn't seem to be available quite yet. We'll bring the paper flyers on Friday, in case anybody is interested.

Video clips from Fermilab dancing Jan 24 2008

Video clips below were taken as we were doing the Dances that Lee Otterholt had just taught. Since we only did Koritsa once, and I was dancing, not filming, I don't have that one, but using Google, I found this video of a group in Sacramento doing Koritsa

Besides Ljiljino Kolo, Bordeiasul, Seksmansril, and Koritsa, he also taught a dance called Balutsa, but I'm afraid I skipped that one.

Friday Jan 25 dancing ***CANCELLED*** due to weather

With the nasty snowy weather tonight, we decided to cancel tonight's dancing in
Downers Grove, so you can all stay home warm & safe (and we can, too :-) ). We've
called the regulars whose numbers we have - I hope anybody who was planning to
come gets the message.

Turns out we were going to be relegated to the smaller room tonight, anyway -
I got e-mail from the church secretary yesterday, saying:
So sorry for the late notice - I completely forgot that there is a dress
rehearsal in Fellowship Hall tomorrow night for the cowboy show that the
church is putting on this weekend.

We're also sorry for the late notice - stay warm, and hopefully we'll see you
next week.

Woody Allen's "Scoop" and folk dancing...

I just watched the movie "Scoop" - at one point, Woody Allen's character is trying to suggest reasons why Hugh Jackman's character might have lied about being out of town:

“Maybe he belongs to one of those clubs where they are cross-dressers?” he says. “Or maybe he does folk dancing.”

Unfortunately, that's the only reference to folk dancing in the movie; and it's not a real great movie...

If you surf to the link above, you probably shouldn't click on the link to the "OFFICIAL SITE" scoopmovie.net - it doesn't look like an official site. I'm guessing after the movie was released maybe they released the domain name and somebody else picked it up; it looks kind of hinky.

June Camp -- May 30 - June 1, 2008

Received from Mady:

Happy 2008!

As you start to plan this New Year, save the weekend of May 30 - June 1 for this year's fabulous June Camp. We're excited to announce that we'll have two main teachers this year: BOTH Jaap Leegwater, teaching his well-researched specialty of Bulgarian dance, AND Lee Otterholt, who will bring us a great mix of Balkan styles and also Norwegian.

The camp will again be at comfortable and convenient Beloit College, and will include such favorite aspects as the Friday afternoon Dance Exchange, request dancing Friday night, a live band Saturday evening, Happy Hour, the Ice Cream Social, a special commemmorative T-shirt, and a camp video.

Please save the dates, and look for registration flyers at Madison's Folk Ball. By the end of January, they should be available to download, along with further information on the new June Camp website at: http://junecamp2008.googlepages.com/

If you have questions, or if you'd like a paper flyer mailed to you, don't hesitate to contact us at this new email address for June Camp junecamp2008@gmail.com

New Years Playlist, Potluck Recipes, Lost+Found

One nice thing about playing the music from the computer is that it's easy to save the program as a playlist, and Jay wrote a little script to extract the names in plain text format -- attached below is the program of dances from the New Years Day party.

The spicy lentil-potato-filled tortilla roll-ups were based on the filling from this samosa recipe, except that instead of fussing with making the dough and baking or frying, I just spread the cooked filling on store-bought flour tortillas, rolled them up, chilled and sliced them. And I used mixed vegetables instead of peas, because I don't like peas. If anybody else was asked about their recipes and would like to share, you can add it to this post as a comment, if you'd like. Remember, you're welcome to comment on this or any other post in the blog. Or e-mail us if you have something interesting to share, and I can add it to the blog, if you don't want to mess with it yourself. I can't post PDF or MSword files, but plain text or HTML or URL links or .JPG images are all fine.

In the lost+found department, somebody left behind something that I'm surprised they haven't asked about yet - if you were there and check your belongings and find something missing, we'll have it there to be claimed on Friday. If you're not a Friday regular, please contact us to make arrangements to identify & retrieve the item.

Happy New Year!
